Signs Your Cat Has Worms in Their Poop

Signs Your Cat Has Worms in Their Poop: One of the most common inquiries as a veterinarian is “Why does my cat drag its butt on the floor?” or “What are those rice like things in my cat’s bottom?”The answer often lies inside the litter box.

Why Checking Your Cat’s Poop Matters

Cats are masters of hiding illness. By the time they act sick, the worm infestation is usually severe. However, their feces and litter box tell the truth immediately. Regularly inspecting your cat’s stool is the single best non invasive way to catch parasites before they cause organ damage or spread to humans.

7 Visual Signs Your Cat Has Worms in Their Poop

You don’t need a microscope to spot most infestations. Here is what to look for:

1. The Grains of Rice

What you see: Small, cream-colored segments that look like sesame seeds or moving grains of rice. When fresh, they stretch and contract. When dry, they look like golden sesame seeds stuck to the fur or stool.
The Vet’s Note: These are proglottids breaking off. You usually see them around the anus or on the stool surface not inside it. If you see these, your cat likely has fleas.

2. Long, White Spaghetti Noodles

What you see: Actual worms that look like wet, white or light brown rubber bands. They can be 2 to 4 inches long. You may find a single worm curled on top of the poop, or a tangled mass.
The Vet’s Note: These are massive. You cannot miss them. If a cat vomits these up too, the burden is dangerously high.

3. Stringy, Mucousy Poop

Observations: Worms which appear like wet rubber bands of white/light brown color. Length may range from 2 to 4 inches. You can spot a worm, coiled up on top of the feces or a cluster of them.

The Vet’s Note: This is a classic sign of Hookworms or Whipworms. The worms irritate the intestinal lining causing the body to secrete excess mucus. The “strings” in the mucus are the actual small worms.

4. Dark, Tarry or “Coffee Ground” Stool

What you see: Poop that is black, sticky and smells metallic.
The Vet’s Note: This is not a worm you see but a sign of Hookworms. Hookworms attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood. They bleed internally. Dark stool means digested blood. This is a medical emergency especially in kittens.

5. Bloody Diarrhea

What you see: Normal looking poop with bright red streaks on the outside or loose stool with red liquid.
The Vet’s Note: This indicates inflammation in the lower bowel caused by Whipworms or severe Hookworms. The worms are literally scraping the lining off.

6. Visible Worms “Swimming” in Fresh Watery Stool

What you see: Very thin, tiny worms moving rapidly in a freshly passed watery stool.
The Vet’s Note: This is Strongyloides. They are hard to see with the naked eye unless you look closely at a wet sample moving.

7. The “Poop Doesn’t Look Wrong,” but the Cat is Losing Weight

What you see: Perfectly normal, log-shaped stool.
The Vet’s Note: Not all worms live in the poop. Some require a fecal float test at the vet. If the stool is “normal” but your cat has a potbelly, dull coat, or eats constantly yet loses weight presume worms and get a test.

Beyond the Litter Box: Secondary Symptoms

Even if you don’t see worms, these physical signs confirm the diagnosis:

  • Scooting: Dragging bottom on the carpet.
  • Bloated Belly: A hard, round “potbelly” in kittens.
  • Bad Breath: Unusually foul, metallic breath.
  • Licking Genitals: Excessive grooming of the anal area.

What Worms Look Like vs What They Don’t

  • Maggots: These are fly larvae found in old poop left in the box for days. They are fatter, darker and have a defined head. Worms are smooth and pale.
  • Fiber strings: Undigested plant matter looks like green thread and does not move. Worms move.
  • Rice grains: If they move, they are tapeworms. If they don’t, it could be dry skin or litter crystals.

Immediate Action Plan

Step 1: The “Fresh Sample” Rule
Worms die quickly outside the body. In case you notice any worms, wear gloves, pick up the worm and the feces around it within 2 hours in a Ziploc bag.

.Step 2: Take a Picture
Step 2: Take a PictureTake a picture before flushing Movement on video is even better.

Step 3: Do NOT buy OTC dewormers
Over the counter dewormers from pet stores kill Roundworms only. They miss Tapeworms, Hookworms and Giardia. You need a prescription broad spectrum dewormer from your vet.

Prevention is always better than cure.

  • Flea means worms: almost all worms are happen due to fleas.
  • Observations: Worms, which appear like wet rubber bands of white/light brown color. Length may range from 2 to 4 inches. You can spot a worm, coiled up on top of the feces or a cluster of them. The worms will lay many eggs which will be mature within 24 hours.
  • If cats stay indoors: If you have indoor cats, worms will be contracted when the cat plays with flies or the eggs carried in by you on your shoes.

The Risk to Humans

  • Roundworms: The child ingests the eggs present in the contaminated soil and becomes blind.
  • Hookworms: Hookworms may enter the body through the skin leaving red itchy marks on it.

In case you suspect the presence of worms in your pet cat, you should clean your hands. Boil litter tray.
